An indispensable component that is enormously important in vehicle development, for data acquisition, validation, optimization and further development of vehicles: measurement technology. An often unnoticed field that will shape the future and make the decisive contribution to autonomous driving. Our colleague and experienced professional in measurement technology gave us some exciting insights.
What actually is measurement technology and what types are there?
Measurement technology is a decisive factor in vehicle development. It enables the recording of physical variables such as temperature, pressure, speed and also “non-physical” measurement data such as adaptation values and CAN bus signals. Measurement technology forms the basis for all further development and simulation of vehicles.
In the last 50 years, for example, sensor technology in vehicles has developed dramatically. In the past, simple sensors such as the oil pressure sensor were common, but today a large number of different sensors are used. These include sensors for the braking and steering systems, for exhaust gas purification and for engine control. Thanks to measurement technology, the further development of electronics has also contributed to the fact that more and more sensors can be installed in the vehicle to ensure optimum performance and safety.
There are a variety of measurement systems, depending on the measurement requirement. In vehicle technology, the use of a modular design has proven successful, in which different measurement modules are connected to a logger, which is used for data recording. In this way, different measurement variables are combined into one measurement record.
How do advances in measurement technology influence vehicle development?
Measurement technology has an important impact on the future. Through its further development, even more precise measurement data can be recorded, which in turn enables better development of resource-saving, safe and customer-friendly vehicles. For the desired goal of autonomous driving vehicles, for example, the modernization of sensors and measurement technology for real-time evaluation of data is indispensable.
And, of course, data analysis tools are very important for vehicle development in this regard, as they help optimize driving assistants as a precursor to autonomous driving. However, real-time data analysis and the high data rate are placing ever-increasing demands on the analysis tools and require an ever-increasing proportion of AI in the tools used.
